Metadata for a combined Text-Image-Database - combined text and image search in defined corpora (F-AG 4)

Project content

The aim of this project is the preparation of a text corpus on the one hand and of an image corpus on the other hand. This is done by the manual annotation of metadata for the later development of a text-image search, which will then be independent of predefined metadata: We want do this by using the example of the presentation of Scythians on Greek vases and in textual descriptions in ancient literature. This way, the project intends to merge and link the archaeological material with the literary sources as well as geographical and chronological information in order to develop a new field of research in the classical studies: data mining in different media. The study of visual and literary representations of Scythians is integrated in an analysis of volatility and coherence of mental concepts in different media within the eAQUA-Project. This results in numerous questions regarding continuity and discontinuity of ideas about Scythians, nomads and barbarians, and here especially their influence on the visual arts and parallel or contrary developments in ancient texts. All of this requires a specific expertise in the creation of the metadata model. The following steps are necessary to the work in the project:

  1. Preparation of a specific text corpus for the search: Creation and permanent online publication of a text corpus with sources on the Scythians. Tagging of the texts in TEI and mapping of the TEI to CIDOC CRM.
  2. Preparation of a corpus for the analysis of image search: Mapping of the image database of Scythians in vase painting with the interface of archaeological data in CIDOC CRM on TEI.
  3. Creation of a CMDI-Profile, which is the standard for metadata within the CLARIN project and conversion, archiving and allocation of the metadata.
  4. Development of a Web interface for the web service in CLARIN-D, which gives the users access to the metadata. In July 2012, the project was approved and the work started in December 2012.
