CLARIN-D for History

CLARIN-D supports research in modern history by providing services to explore language resources, analyse written and spoken text, and archive corpora and research results. The Working Group 8 »History« is a network of scholars within CLARIN-D whose aim it is to support historical studies by providing a digital research infrastructure.

Data for research

The Virtual Language Observatory (VLO) provides access to many resources for research, e.g. annotated online corpora of the Blumenback collection Korpora.

A dedicated full text search, the Federated Content Search (FCS) of CLARIN-D, allows researchers to search the full text of many resources of the CLARIN community. This way, it is possible to find examples for the usage of terms. The search results and the source documents can be extracted and saved as a corpus for further analysis.

Software for research projects

CLARIN-D provides software and web services for the analysis and preparation of language data. This includes WebAnno for the manual and semi-automatic annotation of texts or WebLicht for the automatic annotation of texts with a variety of tools. These can be combined according to the needs and preferences of the user.

Providing your own research data

Apart from tools for the analysis of language data, the CLARIN network allows archiving one's own research data and providing it to the research community for reuse. By cooperating with a CLARIN centre, the data can be prepared in a way that it is sufficiently described. For example, one tool for describing data is the CMDI-Maker, which creates descriptions that allow easy access for the research community.

Would you like to provide your data through the CLARIN-D infrastructure? Contact a specialised centre or contact the CLARIN-D Helpdesk.

Contacts in the Discipline

Within CLARIN-D, the various research fields are represented through discipline-specific working groups (WGs). Members use CLARIN services, take part in their further development, and connect with and advise other researchers in their respective disciplines. The working groups ‘Modern History’ and ‘Contemporary History’ have concentrated thus far on two projects to curate digitised (mass) sources and helped develop the tool ‘DiaCollo’ to aid in diachronic collocation analysis. Since the end of 2016, the members of these two groups have merged to form Working Group 8 ‘History’.

The Working Group on History has assumed the task of building a framework for researchers working in historical disciplines to discuss and exchange experiences concerning practices of digitisation, general standards for annotation and metadata, computer-assisted analytical tools, and copyright questions. The group also coordinates and supports interdisciplinary dialogue between the historical field on the one hand and information sciences, computer linguistics and linguistics on the other.

Members of the working group identify and describe linguistic resources whose digitisation and access through the CLARIN-D infrastructure is particularly relevant to work in the historical disciplines. Members advise researchers on the preparation, evaluation and storage of their digital sources. Digital analytical tools and digital corpora that already exist are evaluated in terms of their usefulness for historical research and presented to the specialist group.

Within CLARIN-D, the Working Group on History (WG 8) participates in various interdisciplinary working groups to expand and optimise the services provided. WG 8 is involved in a working group on legal consultation as part of the CLARIN-D Legal Help Desk. At the centre of this endeavour are questions concerning licensing rights for the use of (digitised) sources in the historical disciplines and the treatment of research data and researchers’ own publications.

Resources from the Discipline for the Discipline

During the implementation phase of CLARIN-D, the WG identified important resources and tools, which have been developed and prepared for reuse. These small projects are called curation projects within CLARIN-D.
